Hatillo
The “Festival de las Máscaras” held annually since 1823.

Founded in 1823, Hatillo is a major agricultural area and produces one-third of the milk consumed in Puerto Rico. The town is best known for the annual Festival de las Máscaras and the Paso Fino horses. The mask festival has been held annually since 1823.
During the festival, on December 28, the biblical story of the search for the Baby Jesus is reenacted. Brightly dressed men in masks, representing King Herod’s soldiers, run through the streets in a vain attempt to find the Baby Jesus. At ... (more)

Celebrated since the Spaniards founded Hatillo in 1823. It represents the biblical story of King Herod ordering the death of all infant boys, attempting to kill Baby Jesus. Men with colorful masks and costumes represent the soldiers, who run or ride through the town from early morning looking for the children. Food, crafts and music.
