The town was named after the local marine life: the manatees found along the north shore. Manatí has a rich artistic and literary heritage, and its name, the “Athens of Puerto Rico,” traces back to the early 1900’s when Manatí was the literary capital of the Island.

Fait partie d'un important écosystème comprenant des "mangroves", des cavernes, des stalagmites, des stalactites, des pétroglyphes et la mer. Il est conseillé aux visiteurs d'être prudents surtout quand la mer est agitée. Pour les surfeurs et les plongeurs la Playa los Tubos est plus recommandée.
